Ingredients:
250 grams of lamb cut into small cubes, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, a pinch of salt and pepper, half a teaspoon of mixed herbs, half a tablespoon of frying oil, half a teaspoon of dried mint, a teaspoon of minced garlic, 2 pieces of pita bread, a quarter of an onion (thinly sliced), half a tomato (thinly sliced), half a cup of Greek yogurt and a quarter of a cucumber (grated and squeezed).
Materials:
A pan, a large bowl, a small bowl, a ladle, a knife and a cutting board.
Method:
Meat:
1. Combine your 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, salt and pepper, half a teaspoon of minced garlic, dried mint and mixed herbs into a large bowl.
2. Then, add your meat into the large bowl and mix thoroughly.
3. Pour your frying oil onto a pan.
4. Cook your meat until brown and let it rest for 5 - 10 minutes.
Sauce:
1. Combine your salt and pepper, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, half a teaspoon of minced garlic, cucumber and yogurt into a small bowl.
Bread:
1. Carefully smear your pita bread with olive oil and place it on a clean frying pan to heat it up.
2. Thinly slice your tomato and onion using a knife.
3. Add your cooked meat, onions and tomatoes onto your pita bread.
4. Add your sauce and enjoy!

My recipe fits within the Australian guide to healthy eating as it contains a very balanced amount of meat, vegetables and bread. The reason why meat such as lamb is good for you is because it is a high source of protein, which means it can help strengthen your bones and muscles. Vegetables are important in your diet because it contains a lot of nutrients for fighting off cancer and heart disease. And lastly, bread is healthy because it has fiber in it, which is great for your digestive system.
How did you help during the cooking process?
Although this was quite an easy dish, I got help from my mother so that she could help me on the steps that I wasn't so confident about doing. Since my mother is excellent at cutting, she was responsible for the tomatoes and onions. And since I like frying, I was in charge of preparing the meat and bread.
How did your family enjoy eating a new dish?
My family was actually quite surprised with how well my dish came out. My mother said at one time that my dish had a wide range of ingredients, which made it very delicious. I in particular thought that this dish was very good because it made me full. This was probably due to the bread that I ate.

Yes. I will most likely be cooking this dish again as it is very easy to make. This is similar to my pasta recipes, as they required very little steps and ingredients. I might also be cooking this dish again because it is very healthy for my body, especially as it contains a combination of bread, vegetables and meat.

I believe this dish originated in the country Greece. According to some archaeological findings, souvlaki was found in some ancient Greek texts, denoting that it came from Greece. This is fascinating as it would have meant people have been eating souvlaki for more than 2000 years ! Although I'm not Greek, I am adventurous and enjoy trying all types of food.
Did cooking this dish inspire you to research and choose new dishes more frequently?
Yes it did. This is because this dish helped prove even more that there are many dishes around the world just as delicious as those in Australia. Recently, I've been really enjoying Asian dishes such as ramen and sushi. Some other dishes that I've been planning to try in the future are meals that come from India. I like Indian foods as they are very spicy and healthy to eat. I remember when I used to go with my father to try Indian cuisine, it was a very fun experience!
